Avoiding Drama Disasters - What Every Actor Will Learn One Way Or The Other
The act of acting should be no act at all. acting naturally should be the norm not the exception. We may have gotten so use to acting like what we think is acceptable or cool, that we have forgotten to be ourselves. Once, I was tired, I forgot to "act" like who I thought I should be and someone asked, "what is wrong with you? You're not acting like yourself." I realized I wasn't "on." I was busted. It takes a lot of work to be "on" all the time - in fact it is probably impossible. What's the point? Be yourself. Of course you may have forgotten who you are if you've been acting most of the time.
Here's the deal. A good actor must be able to act naturally. Drawing from their personal experiences and their not "on" persona. One of the best examples is the action of drivers who think nobody sees them pick their nose at the red light. It's a riot. As if they are mining for a sunken treasure. They - we - forget that glass is transparent. And now with hands-free cell phones you can witness the antics of any one-sided argument at sixty-five miles an hour. I use this to polish my antics as well, by mimicking their behavior. In case you have read my other post, you know this is my usual habit.
When I do this when shopping, my wife will typically elbow me in fear I will get caught. I never do. But, this is a great acting exercise, in fact it is the beginning place for any drama script you are presented with. Just mimic someone that would be like the character for your scene work. You will find that as you mimic, you will fell like the character. I can't explain it, don't even care to, it works and that is the point of my drama workshop "acting Naturally". If it works - use it. The workshop emphasizes that acting is the most natural of things, but not for anyone that is inhibited by the need to be cool.
acting is actually foolish. So get over yourself and act up. Just remember all those "actors" behind the wheel that forget that windows are transparent and perhaps your character will be transparent too.
